The boundaries of Art
In fact, if we ask any citizen about art, he or she will surely answer by referring to any of the above categories. He will probably refer to a painting by Picasso, Don Quixote, a piece of music by Beethoven, even Michelangelo's David.
An illustration of this could be our first canvas. Each and every one of the groups captured in our canvases very generic aspects of art. Very typical concepts and pieces of art that in my point of view are very good to have as a reference, but nowadays we have to look ahead and observe all the new possibilities that art offers. Now is the time to break the boundaries of art!
Personally, I also fell into the usual trap when it came to talking about art. However, after my university classes, I know that art goes much further than that. Art is not only about appreciating and valuing great pieces in history. Art is still a part of each and every one of us today. Art is the variety of playlists we have on our Spotify, the way we choose to organise our Instagram profile, the way we dress, makeup or style our hair for different situations... Art is also the way we choose to be in the world.
So, as a conclusion, I think the idea is not to define art as art is, but rather to define art as... Honestly, defining art as something in particular I think is limiting the concept of art and making it something more vulgar and precarious. On the contrary, opening up the concept of art and talking about a more general and subjective vision, allows the world to make art something beautiful and adaptable to all.
